Africa’s lost opportunities: Why many people risk the dangerous escape across the Sahara

Many Africans risk their lives to cross the vast and unforgiving Sahara Desert in search of a better future in Europe. The journey is fraught with extreme dangers, and tragically, some do not survive. Despite the immense natural resources and potential of Africa—a continent rich in minerals, fertile land, and vibrant cultures—many feel compelled to leave.

This stark reality raises difficult questions. Why do so many people see migration as their only option? One answer lies in the leadership that often fails to uplift its people. When leaders prioritize the interests of foreign powers or their own gain over the well-being of their citizens, the result is widespread poverty, limited opportunities, and a deep sense of despair. These “puppet” leaders, influenced by outside forces, too often lack the vision or will to harness Africa’s full potential for its people.

Ultimately, it’s a tragic and unnecessary exodus from a continent capable of sustaining and enriching its inhabitants. Africa’s story could be one of prosperity and growth if more leaders embraced accountability, innovation, and empowerment for their people.

Africa’s hidden wealth: resources in the global power game

Africa is a continent of immeasurable wealth. The map shows the distribution of valuable resources, including oil, diamonds, gold, coffee, uranium and more. These natural treasures could be the basis for prosperity and development in African countries. However, instead of this wealth benefiting the African people, it is often exploited by international corporations and foreign governments who exert influence under the guise of “democracy” and development aid.

Resources such as oil, diamonds and rare minerals are exported abroad in large quantities. These exports often bring little prosperity to the population, as the profits flow into the hands of a few influential elites or foreign companies. Agricultural products such as coffee, tea and cocoa are also examples of overexploitation: Africa accounts for a large proportion of global production of these products, but the producers only earn a fraction of the final price.

This unfair distribution of wealth leads many Africans to seek better living conditions in Europe. If African nations managed and benefited from their own resources, the continent could be an engine of global prosperity instead of a place of deprivation and exploitation.
