In Switzerland, a ban on face coverings was introduced by referendum in 2021, prohibiting the wearing of burkas and other face coverings in public. The initiative was supported by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) and passed by a narrow majority. It is often referred to as the “burqa ban”, even though it refers to face coverings in general and not exclusively to religious symbols such as the burqa or the nikab.
The ban applies in public spaces, but there are exceptions, e.g. for health or safety reasons.
In Denmark, two women wearing burqas were fined 1000 crowns each. Do you want these rules to be applied all over Europe?
